Welcome rain recorded in the Langkloof

Nelson Mandela Bay’s main catchment area in the Langkloof received up to 40 mm of welcome rain overnight.

Garth Sampson at the PE Branch of the SA Weather Service reports that the rain, accompanied by the melting snow, should give some favourable runoff.

The effects on the dam levels, currently at just 16.93% of total combined capacity, will however only be known in the next few days

Joubertina has received just under 50 mm of rain in the past three days, and Kareedouw just over 40 mm.

The Kouga Dam has received 15.2 millimetres and Patensie 24.6.

Elsewhere, 43.8 mm were measured at the PE airport, taking the total rainfall for the last four days to just under 60 mm.

A whopping 73.4 mm was measured at Plettenberg Bay in the past 24 hours.
Sampson says conditions will remain cloudy to partly cloudy with light rain over the western parts of the region on Wednesday.

It will remain cold to very cold over the region and conditions will clear gradually from the west later.

Barkley East was the coldest town in the Eastern Cape interior yesterday with a minimum temperature of minus six degrees and a maximum temperature of four degrees.

Port Elizabeth recorded the coldest August day time temperature since 2002 at just 10.6 degrees.

Joubertina was also cold with a maximum of 8.8 C which is the 3rd lowest on record.

Coldest temperatures over the interior were:

Barkley East -06/04
Aliwal North -05/09
Jamestown -03/05
