The maximum temperature today was 10.5 C, and the record is 9.3 C measured in August 2002.
The previous record was in August 1967 when 11.4 C was measured.
Garth Sampson at the PE Branch of the SA Weather Service says the cold conditions are set to continue on Wednesday.
The traveller's forecast for Wednesday is for a minimum of 7 degrees in Port Elizabeth and a maximum of 12.
East London is looking at a minimum of 10 and a maximum of just 11 degrees and a fresh to strong south-westerly wind will blow over both Metros.
Snowfalls are expected over the high ground of the Eastern Cape until Wednesday morning.
