The South African Weather Service has issued a warning about possible flooding in the Garden Route district on Thursday following heavy rain overnight.

Up until 8 am, 58 mm of rain had been measured in George, 20.6 mm at Mossel Bay and 25.4 mm at Plettenberg Bay.

The main building of the George municipality had to be closed on Thursday morning, following rain damage to the roof.

Several streets in George were also flooded, including Hope Street in the city centre.

There’s also been a mudslide on the Outeniqua Pass outside George, but Emergency Services are on the scene.

George Municipality spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose told AlgoaFM News that there is a Stop-and-go in place with one lane on the Outeniqua Pass closed to traffic.

Provincial Traffic Services are on the scene, and municipal officials are on route for clean up.

Edwards-Klose has appealed to motorists to please exercise extreme caution on the roads.
