Thunderstorm captivates the Province but did it rain in the catchment areas?

Residents across Algoa Country took to social media on Wednesday night as thunder and lightning storms were reported in most places over the province.

A spokesperson for SA Weather Garth Sampson says the intensity of the rainfall and the amounts of rain were patchy east of Plettenberg Bay.

He says in Kariega, only 1 mm was measured while the 3rd Avenue dip in Newton Park, Gqeberha received 45 mm.

Hail was also reported in Booysens Park and Rowallan Park.

The Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport measured 20 mm, Joubertina 1.4 mm and Patensie 2.5 mm.

Sampsons says it is difficult to determine what happened in the Kouga mountains but Kareedouw measured between 30 and 45 mm of rain.

He says there were reports of flooding in places with un-melted ice pellets still visible in places which will add an additional run-off.

In the area of the Impofu wall, there are unconfirmed reports that 100 mm of rain was received, which unfortunately was not in the catchment area.

Sampson says the rain was not widespread over the entire catchment area, however, some runoff will be caused to the Churchill and Impofu dams.

He says Wednesday nights rains simply gave us some "breathing space" and we are not out of the woods.
