The level of Nelson Mandela Bay’s main supply dams has dropped 0.1% this week to 12.44% of total combined capacity despite last week’s good rains in the main catchment area in the Langkloof.
Local weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says the figures released by the Municipality on Monday are very disappointing to say the least, although they have bought the Metro another week until the critical 10% level is reached where extraction from the dams becomes extremely difficult.
He says, however, that considering the main supply dams drop on average 0.46% per week, the marginal decrease in the past seven days can be viewed as a real rise of 0.45% - although it has been used up already.
Sampson says there’s hope that there is still some inflow into the dams, although the rate is decreasing by the hour.
The forecast for the next week is also completely dry in the catchment area.
