Spring arrives with a 'gust' of wind

South Africans can expect windy and chilly conditions for the next two days as a low-pressure system has made landfall.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) say the system carries the potential for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms as well as strong to gale force winds in places.

On Wednesday gale force NE winds of between 65-80km/hour can be expected in places over the interior like Makhanda, Graaff-Reinet, Somerset East, Port Alfred, Kirkwood, Jeffreys Bay and Kareedouw as well as in the Joe Gqabi District Municipality which includes Aliwal North, Barkly East, Burgersdorp, Jamestown, Lady Grey, Maclear, Mount Fletcher, Oviston, Rhodes, Rossouw, Sterkspruit, Steynsburg, Ugie and Venterstad.

Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers can be expected in most parts of the country including the Eastern Cape.

SAWS say some of these storms are expected to become severe in places on Tuesday evening, with the potential for strong damaging winds as well as large hail.

Along the coasts, strong south-easterly to easterly winds will reach a gale-force (65-70 km/h) from Table Bay and all the way to Port Alfred.

As a result of these persisting windy conditions, seas will deteriorate substantially with high seas and wave heights in an excess of 6m that can be expected between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay.

The cut-off low system will finally exit the country during Thursday, resulting in overall clearance of weather conditions.
