The Buffalo City Municipality is urging motorists to exercise extra caution as roads in most parts of East London are flooded on Thursday morning.
Municipal spokesperson Samnkelo Ngwenya says affected roads include Fleet-street, just before Robots by Pontoon and Settlers Way, the Biko Bridge side towards Westbank and Vincent.
Traffic officers are on the scene monitoring the situation.
Ngwenya said some parts of the Metro are also being affected by power outages while the area of Berlin near King Williams Town is experiencing water shortages due to a pump station that is being repaired.
Meanwhile: the SA Weather Service reports that for the second day in a row, the rain which fell over the Eastern Cape largely missed Nelson Mandela Bay’s catchment area.
According to figures released by the Municipality this morning, the Metro’s four main supply dams are at a mere 17.35% of total combined capacity, which is marginally down from the previous reading taken on Monday.
Only 1.8 millimetres of rain was measured at Kareedouw in the heart of the catchment area yesterday, and the reading taken at 8 am tells a similar story.
PE weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says the catchment measured very little rain with the best figure recorded at Joubertina at just 5 mm.
Kareedouw measured a miserly 0.4 millimetres.
Sampson says the best figure was recorded at the PE Airport, with 33 mm, while there were unofficial readings of more than 50 millimetres measured elsewhere in the city.
Sampson says more showers can be expected throughout the day, clearing from the west later.
