Temperatures plummeted overnight to the coldest morning so far this year across large parts of the Eastern Cape interior.
The farm Buffelsfontein near Molteno recorded the 7th lowest temperature since 2020 of -17 degrees while Jamestown was -9 degrees.
Maletswai (Aliwal-North) was a bone-chilling -7.9 degrees, Khowa (Elliot) -7.5, Graaff-Reinet -6.9 and Barkley East -6.8.
Komani registered a minimum temperature of -6.6 degrees and Middleton -5.8.
A spokesperson for the local weather office Garth Sampson says the freezing temperatures were caused by a series of cold fronts passing south of the country combined with clear skies which resulted in maximum outgoing radiation.
Although the Chief Dawid Stuurman International airport, at 4.6 degrees, was one of the only places over the Eastern Cape not recording the lowest temperature so far this year, frost patches were visible on the outskirts of Nelson Mandela Bay.
Kariega (Uitenhage) was a chilly 1.2 degrees and Patensie 2.1.
