Cooperative Governance MEC Sipho Hlomuka put the death toll at 45 and said it was likely to rise.

Such rainfall is normally associated with tropical cyclones but the SA Weather Service says the KZN rainfall is the result of a cut-off low in the upper reaches of the troposphere which is currently moving seawards.
