A yellow level 4 warning has been issued for disruptive snowfall on Friday leading to some communities being temporarily inaccessible with a possibility of mountain passes in the Eastern Cape being closed.
The South African Weather Services says snowfalls as deep as 2 to 5 cm can be expected from Thursday night over the western high lying areas of the Eastern Cape with heavier snowfalls of 10-20 cm expected over the north-eastern high ground.
Bitterly cold conditions are expected with maximum temperatures barely able to reach 8°C over the high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape.
Small stock farmers are advised to take the necessary precautions as loss of vulnerable livestock can occur.
Widespread rainfall can be expected over the southern and central parts of the country from Thursday onwards.
The South African Weather Services says the 24-hour rainfall accumulations of 25 to 35 mm can also be expected over the drought-stricken parts of the Eastern Cape.
A level 5 warning has been issued for disruptive rain on Friday that can lead to localised flooding.
The areas include the Buffalo City Metro, Ndlambe Local Municipality and several others that will affect towns like Alice, Alicedale, Adelaide, Fort Beaufort, Balfour, Hogsback, Middeldrift, Seymour, Makhanda, Peddie and Hamburg to name a few.
The South-African Aviation Weather Centre says the freezing weather predicted for the country this weekend will affect aviation.
The Weather centre took to its Twitter account to state that the significant drop in temperatures in especially the Western, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal as well as the predicted rain will make aviation operations difficult, especially for the ground staff.
Delays in flights can be expected.
