The South African Weather Services says extremely hot maximum temperatures can be expected on Saturday, especially in the interior of the Eastern Cape.
Spokesperson Garth Sampson says a cold front moving in from the west will result in dry northwesterly winds blowing off from the interior resulting in hot to very hot conditions.
He says this can pose a health risk to people and animals who can suffer from heat exhaustion, heatstroke, bloody noses and dehydration.
Sampson urged residents to take the necessary precautions and to drink plenty of water.
He says the dry conditions can enhance the risk of runaway fires.
Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Sarah Baartman District Municipality as well as in the Inxuba Yethemba; Enoch Mgijima a d Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipalities.
There is a slight chance of heat-induced thunderstorms in places over the interior on Saturday afternoon.
Bhisho, Kariega, Graaff-Reinet and Makhanda are all expected to reach a midday high of 40 degrees while many other towns will be in the mid to high thirties.
