George residents urged to stay home as roads are flooded

Arrive Alive (Twitter)

Go George bus services remained suspended late on Monday morning as heavy rain and flooding caused havoc in the City.

The Municipality says teams are on the ground to assess damage to roads as well as general accessibility.

Meanwhile, the Emergency Centre of George Mediclinic and the Geneva Clinic were both flooded.

A large number of schools in George have also closed, however, matric learners are being assisted to ensure they write exams.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education in the Western Cape Bronagh Hammond says one learner even used a tractor to get to school from Pacaltsdorp.

Meanwhile, the Joint Operations Centre at the Garden Route District Municipality reports that all major and national roads are still open, but that a number of roads in George are closed due to flooding.

Several families have been rescued from their flooded homes and a number of passengers have been rescued from no-less than eight vehicles trapped in floodwaters.

Seven Passes Road in Saasveld is closed due to a massive sinkhole in the road.

All low-lying bridges are closed in Oudtshoorn due to heavy rainfall.

Emergency personnel are currently monitoring the situation at Mossel Bay, Knysna and the Bitou Municipality at Plettenberg Bay where heavy rain has also been reported.

The Garden Route District Municipality is once again making an urgent appeal for the public to stay at home and to avoid flooded areas and roads wherever possible.

According to the South African Weather Services, by 8 am on Monday morning George had already received 78.5mm or rain, with more expected.
