'Wave warning' issued for WC coastline

The public and especially rock anglers have been warned to be extra cautious along the coast between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay over the next 24 hours as damaging waves can be expected.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says the warning is from Friday 4 June until Saturday morning.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says a very high wave period of 18-20 seconds with wave heights of 3-3.5 meters are expected

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says there’s also the possibility of strong rip currents.

He says this prediction is a result of a collaboration between various partners who developed an experimental rip current forecasting system.

It is envisaged that the system will go live towards the end of this year, with routine forecasts produced for a pilot site.

Lambinon says Stellenbosch University, the NSRI, SAWS, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, South African Environment Observation Network, City of Cape Town, Lifesaving South Africa and the University of Plymouth were all involved in developing the rip current forecasting system.
