The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a Level 5 snow warning across large parts of the Eastern Cape.

According to SAWS, there is a fair chance of significant snowfall in Barkly East, Maclear, Ugie, Mount Fletcher, Matatiele and Elliot which could result in the loss of livestock and dangerous driving conditions.

Provincial Traffic says at the moment, the Barkly Pass along the R58 between Elliot and Barkly East is driveable but motorists are advised to drive with extra caution as the road surface is wet and slippery.

The Penhoek pass along the N6 between Komani and Maletswai is also open.

The situation will be monitored throughout the day and relevant warnings will be issued.
