The Proteas chased down a record score at Supersport Park in Centurion to level the KFC T20 series one-all against the West Indies on Sunday.
A day after losing the opening match, the Proteas set about completing the “highest successful run chase in all T20s,” winning by six wickets with seven balls remaining.
The West Indies put on a massive 258 for 5, thanks to 118 off 46 balls by Johnson Charles, supported by Kyle Mayers with 51, Romario Shepherd, 41, and Rovman Powell contributed 28.
In response, the opening pair of Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks put on a stand of 152, with De Kock racing to 50 in just 15 balls and then scoring his first T20 century off 43 deliveries faced.
Speaking post-match on Supersport, De Kock, who was named Player of the Match, said they knew that they could “catch up” at Centurion, adding that his first T20 ton at the venue was also “quite special.”
Captain Aiden Markram said it was a great game to be part of, and he also paid tribute to Reeza Hendricks, who opened the batting with De Kock and then stealthily went about his business, scoring 68 off 28 balls and registering his 12th T20 50 along the way.
Rilee Rousouw bludgeoned 16 off 4 balls, while David Miller made a run-a-ball 10, before captain Aiden Markram, with 38 off 21, and Heinrich Klaasen, with 16 from 7 balls, saw the South Africans home for a record victory.
