Sharks and Bulls win in Super Rugby


Vodacom Super 15 champions, the Chiefs claimed their second bonus-point victory in an ominous display of early season form, to sit just behind early pace-setters the Brumbies after the weekend's Super Rugby matches.

The Chiefs scored six tries to crush the Cheetahs 45-3 in Hamilton.

The Blues maintained their early season momentum, by beating arch-rivals and seven-time champions. the Crusaders 34-15 at home on Friday.

Australia's two-time champions, the Brumbies lead the overall points standings after a bye this weekend.

The Reds scrambled to an 18-12 victory over the Hurricanes, while the Waratahs stormed home from 10 points down at half-time to beat the Rebels 31-26.

At home: the Bulls lead the South African conference after beating the Western Force 36-26 in Pretoria.

In second place are last season's finalists, the Sharks, who ground out a 12-6 victory over the Stormers in Durban .

Meanwhlle;  It was a mixed weekend for the Port Elizabeth teams contesting the Cell C Community Cup Rugby Championship.

GAP Despatch were impressive as they ran in ten tries in beating Villagers from Worcester 67-23 at the Despatch Central Fields.

Not so for African Bombers who were beaten 53-33 by Pretoria Police at the Zwide Stadium.

In Pacaltsdorp near Oudtshoorn, SWD champions Evergreens beat Pool D favourites Brakpan 28-24 thanks to a brace of tries by lightning-quick wing Joseph Fortuin and an injury-time drop goal by replacement Leegan Moos.

In Wellington, East London's Old Selbornians edged Roses United 26-25.

Tonight, its the turn of the NMMU Madibaz when they host University of Johannesburg at their PE campus in the Varsity Cup.

The Madibaz have won both home games so far over Wits and Shimlas - kick off is at 7 o'clock this evening.
