SA up to 4th on Medals table

South Africa are up to 4th on the Commonwealth Games medals table following gold by Cameron van der Burgh and Chad Le Clos in the pool and Fanie van der Merwe on the athletics track on Monday.

Van der Burgh had been beaten by 19-year-old English sensation Alan Peaty in the 100 metre breastroke on Saturday, but earned revenge as he edged out Peaty by just two hundredths of a second to take gold in the 50 metre Breastroke in a new Games record time of 26:76sec

Le Clos doubled his gold medal tally for the meet with a comfortable victory in the 100m butterfly.

Fanie van der Merwe grabbed gold and training partner Charl du Toit silver in the 100m T37 final for para athletets.

South Africa now have 9 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals.

Australia lead the way with 30 gold followed by England with 27, hosts Scotland with 13 and then South Africa.
