Nelson Mandela Bay River Mile postponed

River Mile - Zsports

Another high-profile sporting event in the Eastern Cape, the Nelson Mandela Bay River Mile, has fallen victim to Covid-19.

Sport events company Zsports announced on Wednesday that it was postponing the 97th edition of the popular swimming event.

The Nelson Mandela Bay River Mile was scheduled to have taken place on the Sunday’s River at Colchester on Saturday the 27th of February.

Zsports owner Michael Zoetmulder said that with no sponsors this year and a forced restriction on entries due to Covid-19, it was simply not feasible to hold the River Mile this month.

An alternate date of 11 April has been pencilled in should the current situation change significantly.

“The announcement of our South Africa Covid-19 numbers dropping and the lifting of certain lockdown restrictions is great news for us at the moment,” said Zoetmulder.

“But unfortunately,  we have been advised that controlled sports events are still not permitted under Lockdown Level 3 and we have to wait for this to be reviewed by the 15th February.”
