French Open Champion Rafael Nadal crashed out in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday in the first ever first round Grand Slam loss of his career.
Noticeably limping and generally out of sorts, Nadal left Wimbledon with a 7-6 7-6 6-4 defeat against 135th-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium.
Defending Chamion Roger Federer needed only 68 minutes to beat 48th-ranked Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.
Second seed Andy Murray eliminated 92nd-ranked Benjamin Becker of Germany 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
Unseeded 32 year-old Lleytton Hewitt stormed into the second round in impressive fashion, knocking out Swiss 11th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
Sixth seed Joe Wilfred Tsonga cruised passed David Goffin of Belgium in straight sets.
In ladies play:
3rd seed Maria Sharapova battled into the second round with a 7 6 6 3 win over France's Kristina Mladenovic.
2nd seed Victoria Azarenka injured her right knee in the second set but still managed to beat Maria Koehler 6 1 6 2.
The two world number ones and top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams open their Wimbledon campaigns on Tuesday on centre court.
First up at two pm SA time will be Williams against Mandy Minella of Luxemborg.
They'll be followed by Djokovic against Germany's Florian Mayer.
