Nelson Mandela Bay is set to enjoy socio-economic spinoffs worth more than R200 million in the first quarter of 2023 through sporting events alone.
The Friendly City is hosting at least 10 national and international sports events over the next few months with the hospitality, accommodation, transport and business sectors anticipating an economic boost of around R200 million.
The international events include cricket, cycling, surfing, athletics and golf.
St George's Park is one of just three stadiums in the country, along with Cape Town and Paarl, to be hosting the fast-approaching ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
NMBM Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Mayoral Committee Member Bassie Kamana said the Metro was proud to be a part this momentous occassion as it will be the first
time South Africa hosts the Women's World Cup.
"We have invested some R30 million over the years in upgrades to St George's Park Cricket Stadium and that investment has led us to where we are today - being chosen as a host City for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup."
Another NMBM sponsored sport event, the Nedbank Runified 50km race, which has been awarded gold status from the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), as well as Elite label status from World Athletics for 2023, will see hundreds of top national and international athletes chasing their share of R1 million in prize money on the city beachfront on the 26th of February.
The much-anticipated Ironman 70.3 and Ironman African Championships returns to Nelson Mandela Bay on 4 & 5 March while the City hosts the SA Lifesaving Championships from 30 March to 5 April.
