The Plett Wedge Classic, hailed as the longest standing bodyboarding event in SA, is back for its 18th year running! Plettenberg Bay boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and with the Wedge Beach offering bodyboarders the ultimate wedging shorebreak and fast barrels, it’s clear to see why they flock back year after year, to compete for the coveted title of ‘King of the Wedge’.
Event organisers, OfftheHook Events, are thrilled to have Plett Tourism come on board as this year’s main sponsor behind the SABA Sanctioned event. “It’s fantastic to have Plett Tourism’s continued support for this event,” says Event Manager Louise Craig, and adds, “Not only is the Wedge Classic a great platform for bodyboarders to be recognised for their achievements in this sport, but also a great way for Plett to impart that ‘Plett feeling’ to the many visitors it brings into our beautiful Bay”.
“We are also really stoked to have last year’s Juniors champion, and Plett local, Niklas Martin, come on board as an ambassador for The Wedge Classic. We feel that it is very important for younger bodyboarders who are just getting into the sport, to have a positive role model to look up to”, says Louise. “Last year saw the inclusion of Synchronised Bodyboarding between Pros and Groms (younger riders) and as it was so well received by both spectators and riders have decided to include it in this year’s line up as well.”
The Wedge Classic 2013 will be held over 3 days, from the 3rd to the 5th of July and competitors and spectators alike can be sure of an awesome few days on the beach with great tunes, loads of giveaways and R14 000 in cash prizes to be won. The competition is open to all ages from boys/girls right up to Grand Masters. Riders will be judged on two main areas: firstly they will be judged on their ability to ride inside the barrel, as deep and long as possible, exiting with control and, secondly, on the execution of manoeuvres in the most critical part of the wave, landing as smoothly as possible, which will show both style and control.
With its unique left-breaking wave, there’s no other place quite like Plett’s Wedge Beach, offering bodyboarders the perfect spot to pull off the best Rolls, ARS’, Backflips and Inverts. “We are so amped for this year’s Wedge Classic”, says Louise, “and look forward to yet another successful event.”
Briefing will be held on Tuesday the 2nd of July at OfftheHook Seafood Cafe at 6pm, where riders will be able to register and find out all the details for the following competition days. Online entries are open at www.wedgeclassic.co.za.
