EC golfers shine at SA Strokeplay Championships

Jonathan Broomhead: GolfRSA

Recently crowned SA Amateur Champion Kyle de Beer of PE Golf Club and Altin van der Merwe from Humewood Golf Club have both recorded top-ten finishes in the SA Strokeplay Championship at Randpark.

Jonathan Broomhead of Durban Country Club surged to his first international amateur victory with rounds of 67, 64, 64 and 66 to win the GolfRSA flagship event over the Firethorn Course.

He equaled the 72-hole tournament record in the process on a winning score of 27-under-par 261.

The 2022 champion edged GolfRSA No 1 Christiaan Maas by two shots and finished four strokes ahead of Scotland's top-ranked Rory Franssen in third place.

Van der Merwe and De Beer also enjoyed an exceptional week. Van der Merwe stole the headlines on the opening day as he grabbed the first round lead with a 9-under par 63 before ultimately finishing in a highly credible 6th place on 21-under par.

De Beer, who knocked Broomhead out in the quarter-finals on his way to victory in the SA Amateur Championship at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, continued his solid form at Randpark and finished in 7th position on 17-under par.
