Domingo appointed SA cricket coach

Russell Domingo will take over from Gary Kirsten as head coach of the SA national cricket team in August.

Cricket SA president, Chris Nenzani says they took a decision to continue the current culture within the team set-up.

He says there is also enough leadership in the current team set-up, and that is why CSA's board of directors have appointed Domingo as head coach of the national team.

Yesterday, Kirsten said he would not renew his contract at the end of July, in order to spend more time with his family.

Nenzani says Kirsten will take the Proteas to the Champions Trophy tournament in England and Wales next month, and then step down.

38-year old Domingo will take over the reins of the SA Test, ODI and T20 squads on August 1.

A former coach of the SA Under-19 and academy teams, Domingo was promoted from within the Eastern Cape provincial structures, and was named head coach of the Warriors franchise side in August 2005.

Two years ago, when Kirsten was appointed Proteas head coach, Domingo was named as one of his assistants, and in December he took over as coach of the national T20 team.

The Proteas lost only two of 19 Test matches during Kirsten's tenure, securing series victories over Sri Lanka, New Zealand,
England, Australia and Pakistan to cement their place at the top of the world rankings.

They have had less success in the shorter formats over the last two years, however, winning 13 of 24 one-day internationals and half of their 18 T20 games.

They were eliminated in the second round of group-stage matches at last year's World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka.
