Am back in the Bok team for remainder of Rugby World Cup

@Springboks

Springbok Centre Lukhanyo Am is back in the fray at the 2023 Rugby World Cup after being called into the squad as an injury replacement for Makazole Mapimpi.

The winger is heading home after suffering a serious injury in the 49-18 win over Tonga on Sunday night.  He is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks.

Springbok management said on Monday that Am will join the squad in Toulon this week, having returned to training after rehabilitation following a knee injury.

The prolific centre who unselfishly gave Mapimpi the offload to score South Africa’s first try in a World Cup final in Japan in 2019, sustained the injury in Argentina where the Boks won 24-13.

Am is the second injury replacement to the 33-man squad following the call-up of flyhalf Handre Pollard for hooker Malcolm Marx.

Pollard made a successful return to the team against Tonga, playing around 50 minutes of the match and slotting all his kicks.
