A rugby weekend of epic proportions

The Pumas will host the defending champion EP Kings in Friday's Absa Currie Cup first division final in Nelspruit.

The Pumas finished the regular season unbeaten with a 52-33 win over SWD in the semi-finals.

The EP Kings needed extra time at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to beat the Leopards 32-29 in their semi-final.

Western Province and The Sharks booked home semifinals in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division with their 7th victories of the season.

Province's bonus point 36-23 victory against the Lions in Cape Town allowed them to leapfrog the Sharks on the log standings, as the Sharks earned only four points for their narrow 18-16 victory against the Blue Bulls at Loftus.

The Cheetahs registered a convincing 52-21 victory against Griquas in Kimberley to stay in the top four for a semifinal berth.

The fourth-placed Lions, meanwhile, are four points ahead of the Blue Bulls on the log, meaning they will still have work to do to secure a semifinal berth should the Blue Bulls win their final match.

The Lions host Griquas at Ellis Park on Saturday and the Cheetahs are at home to the Blue Bulls.

The match between the Sharks and Province in Durban will determine who finishes top of the table.

Meanwhile: The Sharks have confirmed the appointment of former Springbok World Cup-winning coach Jake White as their new Director of Rugby.
White’s tenure will be effective from the end of October 2013.

And: Springbok Coach Heyneke Meyer says South Africa's disappointment following their 38-27 loss to New Zealand in the Rugby Championship on Saturday was tempered by the belief that the Springboks will continue to improve and pose an even greater challenge next year.

The title decider at Ellis Park was a frenzied spectacle that included nine tries and saw South Africa become the first side to score four tries against the All Blacks since 2010.

While there is no doubt they are still some way short of replacing New Zealand as the world's No 1 side, Meyer took consolation in a much improved showing in the Southern Hemisphere competition as he builds towards the 2015 World Cup.
