Ousted Mayor re-elected in Ekurhuleni

DA Mayor Tania Campbell

The multi-party coalition in Ekurhuleni has been restored to govern the City following the re-election of DA Mayor Tania Campbell on Tuesday, 124 votes to 99 with one spoilt ballot.

Action SA and the Freedom Front Plus said in a joint statement that the victory arose from the inability of the ANC and EFF to come together to choose a new mayor following last month's ousting of Campbell in a no-confidence vote.

Part of the work of the multi-party coalition efforts, they say, must be to ensure stability going forward so that efforts to improve service delivery can take effect over sustained periods of time.

While unexpected, they also acknowledged the support of the EFF in Council on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the DA in Gauteng, Solly Msimanga congratulated Campbell on her re-election to the position of Ekurhuleni Mayor.

He said, however, that these political shenanigans had come at a cost - a financial cost and a cost in terms of service delivery.

He said the process had put an entire metro on pause while backroom deals were been done and had left residents neglected and uncertain as to what will happen next.

He said that now that the ANC and its proxy parties are done playing, the DA-led coalition would get back to working for the residents of Ekhuruleni.
