President Jacob Zuma unveiled a life-size statue to former president Nelson Mandela at his birth village of Mvezo in the former Transkei.
In his speech at the event president Zuma said his statue is but part of the series of projects government's engaged in to try write its own history.
He said the theme for this year's celebrations of Nelson Mandela Day is Operation Clean Up for Madiba.
Zuma said South Africans across the lengths and breadths of the country had dedicated at least 67 minutes of their time to engage in a major cleaning up exercises of their cities, towns, villages and schools to make the South Africa that Madiba sacrificed for clean and habitable for everyone
