Parliament has scheduled a vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma for February 22, amid open speculation as to whether he will be compelled to make way for his deputy, ruling party president Cyril Ramaphosa.
Speaker Baleka Mbete's office said on Friday she had informed the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) that she had acceded to their request for a vote of no confidence in the embattled leader.
"In her letter to the EFF, Ms Mbete informed EFF leader Mr Julius Malema that she had decided to schedule their requested motion of no confidence in the President for 22 February," her office said.
Zuma has survived numerous votes of no confidence in nine years in office but is widely seen to be on the ropes politically as his own party, the African National Congress (ANC) openly mulls whether he should deliver the annual opening address to the national legislature next week.
