President Jacob Zuma has assured the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality that government will continue to provide hands-on support in order to improve governance in the Metro.
Zuma led a delegation of 10 government ministers and deputy ministers to Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday, as part of government's Siyahlola Presidential Monitoring Programme.
He said Nelson Mandela Bay had a long history of turning adversity into success, adding that the Metro had also done well over the years in rolling out universal access to basic services.
Zuma said government would work closely with the province and the Metro to help strengthen governance and put Nelson Mandela Bay on a better footing.
Human Settlements Minister, Connie September, said government would also partner with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to ensure that houses are built in areas where it matters most.
"We want to work with the municipality to make sure that all the money we are spending must go and build more houses, because the problem we have in this municipality is that we are rectifying quite a lot of houses instead of building new houses. That must come to an end, and we need decent people to build these houses" she said.
