CAPE TOWN, September 23 (ANA) – Judge Mandisa Muriel Maya is the new deputy president of the Supreme Court of Appeal – the first woman to hold the position, President Jacob Zuma announced on Wednesday.
Maya takes over from Judge Kenneth Mthiyane following his retirement.
“Justice Maya has close to thirty years experience in the legal profession, having started as an attorney’s clerk at a law firm in Mthatha in 1987,” the presidency said in a statement.
Maya also worked as a court interpreter, prosecutor, and assistant state law adviser in Mthatha.
“She was appointed an acting judge of the High Court in 1999 and a full time judge the following year. She has acted as a judge at the Labour Court, an acting judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal, and as an acting judge at the Constitutional Court. In 2006 she was appointed a judge at the Supreme Court of Appeal.”
