Zipunzana by-pass in East London remains closed following protest

The Zipunzana by-pass remains closed following a protest by residents of Duncan Village.

Earlier, police used rubber bullets and a stun grenade to restore order after residents set up burning barricades and also stoned police.

Police spokesperson, captain Steven Marais, says residents also set up burning barricades in various roads in Duncan Village.

No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, Buffalo City says no formal petition has been presented to the Metro by protesting residents.

Spokesperson, Keith Ngesi, says the Metro has an office that attends to petitions.

"People are allowed to protest to voice their concerns around service delivery issues, however they should do so peacefully and in a positive way without disturbing those who are not protesting. Senior management is currently liaising with people on the ground to establish the cause and we do appeal to the protesters not to damage property"
