Young woman survives drowning incident at Victoria Bay

NSRI Wilderness deputy station commander Mike Vonk says an NSRI duty crew was activated on Sunday afternoon after lifeguards reported a non fatal drowning incident at Vic Bay outside George.

Vonk says lifeguards had rescued a 22-year old bather from the water and required medical assistance for the young woman who was suffering breathing difficulties and complaining of chest pains.

When the Wilderness Sea Rescue crew arrived at a busy Vic Bay, they found the woman, from Oudtshoorn, in the care of lifeguards.

Sea Rescue medics assisted lifeguards with the medical management of the casualty and administered oxygen until EMS Rescue Services arrived.

The casualty was transported by ambulance to hospital in a stable condition and she is expected to make a full recovery.

Vonk commended the lifeguards at Victoria Bay and EMS for their swift response and local law enforcement officials who assisted with crowd control on the beach.
