Xhosa community to forge ties with Orania

The white enclave of Orania in the Northern Cape will be signing a memorandum of understanding with a Xhosa community from the Eastern Cape.

According to Orania spokesperson, Jaco Kleynhans, the MOU with the communit of Upper Mnyameni near Keiskammahoek, will pave the way for greater cooperation between communities seeking greater self reliance.

He says they have been pursuing like-minded groups for the past two decades

"Orania, over the last 21 years focussed very strongly on self-reliance, on building a community from the bottom up and not looking at government for solutions," Kleynhans said.

"The community in the Eastern Cape has the same kind of philosophy and therefore we believe as two communities we can create a different vision for South African communities when it comes to creating a better future for us," he added.

Meanwhile, Siphiwe Mdledle of Upper Mnyameni, says they want to take the community from a culture of dependency to one of self sufficiency.

"Orania came out (from) next to nothing but because they had a common cause that is of developing themselves and organising themselves. So, we thought that they can help us theoretically and practically (of) how they do things that side so that we can match the way we do things this side," said Mdledle.

The Memorandum of Understanding will be signed next Tuesday.
