EC businessman jailed for breaching sentence conditions

A Nelson Mandela Bay businessman has been hauled off to jail for breaching his condition of sentence.
Security company owner, Jakobus van der Merwe, was sentenced in January to eight years in imprisonment after pleading guilty to theft and fraud.
The charges related to PAYE, VAT, UIF and provident fund deductions which were not paid over to SARS and the relevant provident fund.
He was sentenced in January to three years correctional supervision including house arrest, eight years in jail on condition that he repay Sars over R833 000 at a monthly rate of R13.884.
Van der Merwe had neglected to make these payments to Sars and on Monday a magistrate held an inquiry into his breach of sentence and ordered that he serve his eight year sentence.
