The Xanadu Melody clubhouse at NMMU in Port Elizabeth has been extensively damaged by a fire which broke out in the early hours of this morning.
Varsity spokesperson Zandile Mbabela said police and campus security are investigating the cause of the blaze which broke out between 1 and 2 am.
She said campus security was busy determining the extent of the damage and that the matter was under investigation.
Mbabela told AlgoaFM News that despite the incident, the plan is still for staff to return today so that academic activities can resume tomorrow.
This, after four weeks of disruptions, intensive engagements with key stakeholders and a court-ordered mediation process to end the shutdown triggered by the fees must fall campaign.
NMMU says during the shutdown, management met with various student formations in Port Elizabeth and George to ensure that university-specific demands were addressed.
