WSU student to know fate in February

File

Judgment in the theft trial of Walter Sisulu University student Sibongile Mani has been postponed yet again.

Sentencing proceedings were due to get underway in the East London Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.

However, the matter was postponed to 7 February due to the unavailability of the presiding officer who has taken ill.

The judgment was also delayed last month as the final-year accounting student was preparing for her exams.

Mani is accused of the theft of more than R800 000 after R14m was erroneously paid into her NSFAS account in 2017.

The state alleges that she did not report the error, but went on a spending spree in East London, Johannesburg, and Pretoria and eventually used around R800 000 of that amount before her arrest in May 2018 by the Hawks.
