Car guards along the beachfront in Gqeberha will now be registered after obtaining accreditation through the Private Security Regulating Authority (PSIRA).
The official launch of the special project took place on Monday which will see car-guards from Kings Beach to Pollock Beach receiving this accreditation.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, said the “project entails having unregistered car guards follow a course and obtaining the necessary accreditation (Grade E) through Private Security Regulating Authority (PSIRA).”
“In addition, car guards will be wearing a visible ID card on a colour-coded and numbered identification vest or bib,” he said.
Beetge said car guards will have specific areas allocated as per the colour code:
Yellow and Blue - Kings Beach
Yellow and Green - Humewood
Yellow and Orange - Hobie Beach
Yellow and Red - Something Good
Yellow and Charcoal- Pollock Beach
On the back of the vests/bibs will be a unique number for every car guard for easy identification.
Beetge said the car guards that are not registered yet, will be allowed a six-month period to obtain the accreditation.
He said the project was spearheaded three years ago by Warrant-Officer Morne’ van der Berg of SAPS Humewood and since then was joined by the Humewood Community Police Forum, Ward 2 Councillor, Renaldo Gouws, Summerstrand Neighbourhood Watch, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Security, Atlas security, ADT Security and City Wide Security.”
