A 24-year-old Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student was stabbed to death by another student following an argument on Monday night in a student residence in Southernwood, East London.
Police spokesperson, Captain Hazel Mqala, says a 29-year-old male student was arrested.
She says the incident happened at about 8 pm when the deceased was cleaning his room.
It is alleged that the accused walked past the victim's room and made a comment about him using "muthi" to cleanse his room.
Captain Mqala says the victim took offence to this comment and a fight broke out between the two who were eventually separated by other students.
She says when the victim went back to his room the accused returned with a knife.
The victim grabbed a pair of scissors to defend himself and their fight continued and escalated.
Captain Mqala says the victim was stabbed twice in the upper body and fell to the ground.
She says the suspect along with other students then took the victim to a hospital where he was declared dead.
The 29-year-old accused sustained minor injuries and was arrested at the hospital.
He is currently in custody at the Fleet Street Police holding cells and will appear on a charge of murder soon.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released but WSU confirmed that he was a 3rd-year Human Resource Management student.
A spokesperson for WSU Yonela Tukwayo says the suspect is a 3 rd-year Mechanical Engineering student.
“The University condemns acts of violence of any nature on and off-campus. Violence has reached unprecedented proportions that should be a great concern to everyone,” she said.
