A Student from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) who was arrested for his alleged involvement in torching a police Nyala with officers still inside, was granted bail after seven days behind bars.
The 24-year-old Mfuneko Mankengana was granted bail of R1 000.
The State initially indicated their intentions to oppose bail but after the Investigating Officer confirmed Mankengana's address and criminal profile they changed their minds.
Mankengana faces charges of damage to essential infrastructure, public violence, malicious injury to property and two counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He was arrested near the WSU Mthatha Campus following a violent student protest which resulted in the campus being closed.
Mankengana's case has been postponed to the 2nd of June for further investigations.
WSU spokesperson, Yonela Tukwayo, said it was against University policy to reveal details of students when pressed for more information on Mankengana.
Mankengana, however, indicated on his Facebook page that he graduated from the University in January this year.
