Missionvale Care Centre
The founder of Gqeberha's well-known Missionvale Care Centre, Sister Ethel Normoyle has died.
While full details are still being awaited, Algoa FM News has learned that she passed away in Ireland this morning.
She recently returned to her home country after several decades after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
In a message to staff, the Centre said this immense loss is felt deeply by thousands around the world.
Sister Ethel started the Care Centre in 1988 from humble beginnings, spending the next 50 years in service of the local community.
In an earlier statement announcing her move back to Ireland, the Missionvale Care Centre said “as a result of her tireless efforts over the years, she has improved incalculable lives through a diverse range of holistic care services delivered with love and compassion.”
Sister Ethel's valuable contributions have been recognised globally and a host of awards adorn the boardroom walls at the Care Centre.
"These include the Tipperary Peace prize in 1996 - the previous recipient of it was Nelson Mandela. She was also honoured by President Motlanthe with the Order of the Grand Counsellor of the Baobab: Silver, one of South Africa’s top awards, for her excellent service to society."
"Over the years the Care Centre has been visited by some noteworthy people including Mother Teresa in 1988 and Queen Elizabeth in 1995."
