Eastern Cape communities have been warned not to start any fires this winter season as Working on Fire (WOF) is on high alert.

WOF, who work under the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries said in July alone they suppressed 30 fires across the province.

The Provincial Coordinator for WOF Ashlynn Goold says the 'Fire Danger Index" indicated that fires were more prevalent in the Eastern Parts of the Province.

On Monday, several homes and structures were gutted by a fire at Beacon Bay in East London.

It is suspected that the fire was caused by a veldfire which was fanned by strong winds and dry conditions.

No one sustained any injuries in the incident.

Earlier in July, several teams from WOF battled fires in the Ugie district for nearly a week where over a 100 hectares were destroyed.

Goold added that they remain on high alert and are ready to provide firefighting services whenever required.
