Fire fighters with Working On Fire, are on high alert in the Eastern Cape for the winter fire season.
The organisation says there's an increased risk of veld and forest fires, given the current long term weather forecast for the province.
Working On Fire's national spokesperson, Linton Rensburg.
"If we look at the long term weather forecast for the province there is obviously a grave concern that there will be a drier winter that lies ahead, obviously it did not rain that much in the Summer season so there is a great concern that with the long term weather forecast there is an increased risk for veld fires," he said.
Rensburg has also appealed to communities to be extra vigilant and careful.
"We obviously appeal to communities in particular that are living close to open velds and forests to be extra vigilant and careful this winter then they do stuff like open fires. They must always be aware of the environment and of the wind conditions especially in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape"
