EL pair win Continental Milligan rally again

Defending title holders, Colin (54) and Anne Meyer (52) from Border Vintage Car Club in East London have once again won the Continental Milligan Vintge Trial and Tour, after four days of competition in their 1963 Mercedes-Benz 220 CE Coupe'.

This was their third win in the five Milligan Trials in which they have participated.

The couple received the fewest penalty points, three and a half on average, per 39 marshall points over the distance of 932 kilometers covered in the four days. Driving as a team, the Meyers have high regard for the Continental Milligan Vintage Trial. "This event is well organised and it improves all the time," said Mr Meyer.

Second place went to Colin (63) and Susan Dettmann (63) in a 1971 Volvo and Erroll Michell (73) and Billl Odendaal (73) in a 1960 Lancia in third position.

Gishma Johnson, Corporate Communications Manager for Continental Tyre South Africa said this was another successful Milligan "The enthusiasm and vigour displayed by participants is gratifying. It is good to see so much time and effort being put into keeping these classic cars on the road."

This premier Eastern Cape motoring event once again invited entries from across the country, with Herbert (77) and Jean (75) Dugmore travelled from Kimberley to Port Elizabeth in their 1957 Opel Kapitan.

Hannes Geyer, Chairman of the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club (EPVCC) and convener of the Continental Milligan Vintage Trial, said he was pleased with this year's event. "Everything went smoothly. We had no major breakdowns and the participants enjoyed the scenic views of the Garden Route."

Over the four days the participants covered approximately 932 kilometers travelling from Port Elizabeth to the Garden Route and the Little Karoo. This year saw the participation of 30 entries representing 18 marques and 11 clubs.

In line with its status as a regularity rally, the car's odometer and speedometer are sealed. Competitors had to complete each section within the organisers' stipulated time, which is determined according to various classes that accommodate the wide range and age of vehicles.

This was the 44th running of the legendary Milligan, and the 14th consecutive year with Continental Tyre South Africa (CTSA) as the title sponsor. The event is hosted and organised each year by the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club (EPVCC).
