Work underway to repair a broken pipeline taking water to the Wilderness is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
That's according to the Western Cape Department of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.
Spokesperson, James Brent Styan, said that the pipeline, which was attached below the existing walkway over the Kaaimans River Bridge and owned by Transnet, collapsed and fell into the sea at the weekend.
"Sections of the walkway have become badly rusted over time which has become unsafe for pedestrian use and most recently, it appears the structure could no longer support the main water line from George to Wilderness leading to the collapse of the pipeline," he said.
"The engineers working on the repair job estimate that an emergency pipeline will be in place by the end of this week. Provincial disaster management is monitoring the situation," Brent-Styan said.
George Municipality meanwhile said the water supply remains at emergency status level with consumption currently too high in the Wilderness area and as a result reservoir levels are low.
Spokesperson, Chantelle Edwards-Klose, said the system will remain vulnerable until the repair work is completed.
