Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership Programme
The Department of Water and Sanitation said work began on the mega Mzimvubu Water Project in the Eastern Cape on 1 February when workers began clearing an area near a Tsolo Village for the project’s site office.
Department spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, said Phase 1 of the mega-project, slated to cost in the region of R15 billion, entails the construction of an access road to the Ntabelanga Dam site and water treatment works.
He said river crossings have been established to enable easy access for machinery to the site office.
“As far as procurement is concerned, the following national tenders have been evaluated, supply and delivery of G5 aggregates, G7 aggregates, G9 aggregates, Class E wearing course aggregates, concrete storm water pipes and pre-cast concrete culverts for a period of 12 months,” he said.
Ratau said so far 20 jobs were created and he said this included both unskilled and skilled labour.
“This will increase as work progresses,” he said.
Ratau said 13 construction plants were on site to commence with the establishment of the site office.
