Woodridge College evacuated as fire closes N2 outside PE

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said precautionary evacuations were done at Woodridge College outside Port Elizabeth Saturday morning due to smoke from a fire raging close to the N2 outside the city.

Metro spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said the

N2 at the Van Stadens River Bridge had been closed temporarily.
He said people who are not part of the Emergency Services and Working On Fires are urged not to come to the area.

Woodridge College headmaster, Trevor von Berg, said "all children and staff have been evacuated. There is no one on the campus now and the fire department has taken over".

"We've taken children to Baywest Mall and from there they will be taken out by family members. There has'nt been any fire on the property as yet.  The wind has died down so it doesn't look like any immediate threat but there are fires in the vicinity," he said.

A senior officer at Nelson Mandela Bay's Fire and Emergency Services, Ben Coetzee said (at around 10am Saturday) that the fire was under control.
"The Woodridge College is safe as it has been evacuated.  We've got a lot smoke here. We've also got tremedous assistance from farm communities," he said.

Coetzee said a child was injured when a falling powerline knocked him off a light delivery vehicle.  He said the child was treated by emergency medical services.rom there they will be taken out by family members.
