Police in Hofmeyer in the Eastern Cape have opened up an inquest docket after three young women died inside a tavern on Christmas Day.
A spokesperson for police Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says a preliminary report suggests that three women in their twenties died after they were allegedly sprayed with an unknown substance inside the tavern.
He says all three died on the scene.
Brigadier Kinana says they do not want to speculate about anything to safeguard the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.
No suspect has been identified.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
