A tragedy unfolded in Beachview in Gqeberha on Christmas Day when a teenager got washed out of the tidal pool by a big wave.
A spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says various roleplayers were called out to the tidal pool at 5 pm where extensive efforts were made to find him.
He says the 14-year-old from Zimbabwe was swimming with friends in the tidal pool when a massive wave pulled him into the ocean where he disappeared underwater.
The NSRI also made contact with the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to ask for nearby vessels to be on the lookout for the child.
An extensive search was done but there was no sign of the child.
Police divers have now taken over the search which continued on Monday.
