A 38-year-old man from Thembalethu in George is expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday for allegedly brutally assaulting and raping his girlfriend in their home on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says the 33-year-old woman has since been discharged from hospital and is currently in a place of safety where she is receiving counselling.

He says the suspect accused his girlfriend of having an affair and assaulted her before leaving the house to go drink with his friends.

Pojie says when he returned at about 9.30 pm, the argument continued and he hit his girlfriend with a hammer against her head, assaulting her further with glasses and plates.

She was then forcefully violated with an object.

Pojie says the victim managed to escape to her neighbours who alerted the police.

He says, community members launched a manhunt for the suspect and eventually caught him on Tuesday.

He was handed over to the police and will appear in the George Magistrates court on a charge of rape and assault to cause grievous bodily harm.
