EC bus accident - toddler still alive- death toll revised down

Scene of bus accident on Monday that claimed the lives of 30 people

The Eastern Cape Transport Department has revised the death toll from Monday's horror bus crash back to 30, after admitting that a mistake had been made.

Earlier, the Department reported that the death toll had risen to 31 after a child, thought to be the one injured in the crash, had died in hospital.

However, the report received related to the death of another child of similar age, in an unrelated matter.

Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, says they are issuing an unreserved apology for the trauma that this misunderstanding had caused.

He said the toddler who was injured in the bus accident is still in ICU receiving medical attention in Frere hospital.

Any person who could help authorities to identify her is urged to come forward.

On Tuesday the Department expressed their wishes to reunite the little girl with a loved one.

The process of identifying the deceased continued on Wednesday.

The victims, who were travelling to Ngcobo, Dutywa and Mthatha, include 23 women, five men and three children.

DMJ-Transport, based in Cape Town, says their operators obey the speed limit as their entire fleet is monitored by the latest and most advanced fleet management software.

They also state on their website that two coach operators are used at any given time to ensure passenger safety.

The Department of Transport in the EC confirmed that the bus driver was among the deceased.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation has already begun the probe into the crash involving the DMJ bus.

Survivors reportedly said that they had to change coaches in Qonce, after the first bus broke down.
